»In October 2025, Laurens Schlicht travelled to Trier to speak with Lena Haase and Lutz Raphael. Both are historians currently engaged in a research study on working through sexualised violence being conducted in the Diocese of Trier, as part of the Independent Review Commission (Unabhängigen Aufarbeitungskommission) in the diocese. During their research, Lena Haase and Lutz Raphael have spoken with a range of individuals – but above all, they have studied a large volume of archival material. They are in the rare position of having unrestricted access to all the files held by the diocese relating to acts of sexual violence.
What can be done with such files? How are they located – and how can they be examined? These are some of the questions Laurens Schlicht discusses with Lena Haase and Lutz Raphael– along with what working through sexualised violence against children and adolescents can mean from the perspective of historians and for society more broadly, how historians approach this task, and what future working through sexual violence might have, both nationally and internationally.«
